It is exciting to plan for a retirement party. If you’re the one who will be celebrating, it is a good idea to give the invitations to your guests early. Any theme of the party must be indicated in the invitation. Whether it is an informal, formal or just a casual party, it must be stated. You are now giving a hint to your guests of how your party will turn out to be. Ways in which to honor the retiree plus making the guests feel comfortable must be two of the things that have to be thought of. It is not a good thing give the microphone to just anyone unprepared at the party as it will only make the guest feel embarrassed. Do this only when you know that a particular person wants to honor the retiree with a memorable speech. Try to pick someone from the guest list. Tell them of your plan. As for those who are sure to attend the party, you can give a group gift. Colleagues and friends can give each of their contributions to one person in charge of buying the retiree’s gift. It should be done much earlier. On-time arrivals and prompt replies to RSVP requests are signs of good manners. Don’t ever think of taking someone else with you to the party if the invitation only has your name on it. When you pick a gift for the retiree, base the gift on the proximity of your relationship with the celebrant. It may be stated that the retiree opts not to receive gifts, but show good etiquette by giving a card with good wishes.
Any act of fund collection or asking for a general contribution at the party is considered poor etiquette, so is putting up a money tree. This could be an uncomfortable gesture in the eyes of some guests who did not plan on giving a gift or to those who already brought one. Accepting any gift shows good manners and gratefulness.
Be always conscious that the retiree is the star of the party. Don’t ever try to bring attention to yourself. Do not air out any job grievances. To plan a retirement party is a bit difficult. Appreciate any small thing regardless of flaws. Be sure to cooperate and make it a happy celebration for the retiree.
