The team thrives with rivalry. At present it is yearly engaging in contests for rivalry trophies. One of these trophies is the Keg of Nails which they play for against the Louisville Cardinals. The name ‘Bearcat’ originated on October 31, 1914 when the team was playing against the UK Wildcats. There was a fullback on the team named Leonard Baehr. A resourceful and creative cheer leader cheered for ‘Baehrcat’ who was on their side against the wildcats. In 1919, the team came to be known as the Bearcats.
Currently, the Bearcats have a new coach, Butch Jones. The previous coach seemed to have done less than satisfactorily for the team. Initially, the playing style of Jones met with success and hopes are high that the he will lead the team on to ‘rewrite’ history. Among the players on which the hopes of Bearcats fans are pinned are Armon Binns, DJ Woods and Vidal Hazelton.
