The Iowa Hawkeyes Back ground
Football in the City of Iowa started out as a club sport in 1872. It eventually developed into an intercollegiate game in 1882. After six years, the first officially recognized football team of the University of Iowa was born. The original team was invited to play in the Western Football Conference on account of the prowess of its team members. This is also called the Big Ten Conference. After one year the performance of the team was outstanding and they were made to share in the Western Conference title.
It wasn’t until the early 1920’s that the team began to show a notable performance when they won 20 straight games under coach Howard Jones. Then the team caught the national attention in the season of 1939 when they won several upset victories. They were one point shy of the Big Ten Title but their Most Valuable Player Nile Kinnick won many distinctions, including the Heisman Trophy for that year.
IThe extent of the team’s reputation grew considerably in 1920 and the following years. Guided by coach Howard Jones, they garnered consecutive victories. The 1939 season saw the team scoring major upsets against its opponents. In that year, they received many awards. That was the year Nile Kinnick, their Most Valuable Player, was awarded the Heisman Trophy. However, the team missed the Big Ten title by a single point. They also won the Rose Bowl twice as well as the 1958 FWAA national games. That was followed by nineteen seasons of losses. The losing trend came to a halt when coach Hayden Fry was hired in 1979. And from that time until now, The Iowa Hawkeyes have been showing a good performance.
They began by garnering three Big Ten titles plus the exact same number of Rose bowl appearances. They were included in the top 25 teams three times. In 2002 they were in 8th place, in 2008 they were number 20 and then again in 2009 they rose to 7th place… The team entered the top 25 at season’s end three times. They were in 8th place in 2002, number 20 in 2008 and in 7th place in 2009.
Since the team was organized, they have participated in a thousand games. 24 of these games were bowl games.

A number of players have been inducted into different Halls of Fame. Among these are included the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Canadian football Hall of Fame and the College football Hall of Fame among others. In their individual capacity, some of their members have been given awards like the Outland Trophy, the Davy O’brien Award, the Heisman Trophy and the Doak Walker Award. 92 of them have been nominated first team or second team All-Americans.
Many members have displayed exceptional prowess and have been awarded for their achievements. Some of their players are now Hall of Fame-ers. These awards include the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. On their individual merit, Due to their exceptional talent and prowess many of the team members have been getting awards. A number of them belong to one or another Hall of Fame. Among these institutional awards we have the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. Awards for individual achievements have also been received. These include the Outland Trophy, the Heisman Trophy, the Doak Walker Award and many others. 92 of their members has been chosen first or second team All-Americans. Many of them have proceeded to become NFL head coaches or Division I college coaches.
Worthy of special mention are Nile Kinnick and Kile Jones. The former won the only Heisman trophy of the team in 1939 while the latter was the first African-Asian recipient of the of the Outland Trophy in 1955.
Nile Kinnick and Kile Jones deserve special mention. Nile has the honor of winning the only Heisman trophy ever won by the team. Kile, on the other hand, was awarded the Outland Trophy in 1955, the first African-American to do so.. The mascot was created in 1948 but was displayed in the field only in 1959 .
Their home stadium was formerly called Iowa Stadium. The name was later changed to Kinnick stadium to honor Nile Kinnick.
