‘Ole Miss,’ as you may have guessed is the affectionate way the University of Mississippi is popularly referred to in that state. The Rebels are the team which represents the university in the NCAA Division I-A FBS. It is affiliated with the Southeastern Conference.
The University of Mississippi first created a football team in 1893. The move was encouraged by Dr. A. L. Bondurant who became the teams first coach and later the Dean of the school. The inaugural games saw Mississippi against 5 opponent teams. The first one they played against was the Southern Baptist University, now Union University, whom they shut off with a 54-0 score. This was in the same year the team was founded.
In 1897, owing to an epidemic of yellow fever, football was suspended. Again, before the outbreak of the Second World War, the game was banned making it a total of 2 years in all that the team was unable to play.
Selecting the annual national football champion is not the business of the NCAA. Many polling organizations publish their own opinions yearly concerning who is the best team. Public acceptance of those rankings will depend on the prestige of the polling body. Several minor polling outfits voted Ole Miss the National Champion in football for the years 1955, 1959, 1960 and 1962. But the major polls had other preferences. In general Ole Miss was placed in either second or third place by them. It was not until 2003 that the team officially received the title of National Champion, and this was by vote.
The team is remembered for having two ‘firsts.’ They were the first team to travel by plane to the site of the competition. This happened in 1937 when the team flew from Memphis, Tennessee to Philadelphia. Ole Miss Rebels was also the first team whose game was aired on radio. This was for their 1948 match with Memphis.
In 2007 Ole Miss hired its 36th football coach in the person of Houston Nutt. This came after Nutt, coaching the Arkansas Razorbacks, defeated Ole Miss just a few weeks previously. His first season secured for the team a record of 9-4. This was during the 2009 Cotton Bowl Classic. Among those defeated by the Rebels were the Florida Gators, the LSU Tigers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Florida Gators were later proclaimed BCS National Champions.
The team engages in annual rivalry matches with old rivals. The Egg Bowl is a rivalry match between the Rebels and Mississippi State University. In these series, The Rebels lead with 60 wins as against State U’s 40 wins. The Magnolia Bowl is another such game, this time between the Rebels and Louisiana State University. LSU leads in this one with 55-39-4.
The Vanderbilt University Commodores also competes annually with the Rebels. This rivalry series dates back to when both co-founded the Southeastern Conference. The Rebels are ahead in this series with 42-13-2
Among all football programs the Ole Miss Rebels is ranked third. It bagged 21 wins in 33 Bowl events. The College Football Hall of Fame includes ten of their members. The Pro Football Hall of Fame claims 2 players, the Helms Athletic Foundation has included 3 and the National Quarterback Club has one.
