Gene Huey of Indianapolis Colts Letting Go of Coaching Reins for Now
INDIANAPOLIS — Gene Huey is stepping away from coaching — for now, at least.
Huey, who spent the past 19 years as the running backs coach of the Indianapolis Colts, has turned down an offer to take the same position with the Minnesota Vikings.
Huey was fired by the Colts earlier this month, after which Vikings coach Leslie Frazier — who coached with Huey in Indianapolis on 2005 and 2006 — offered him the same position on his new staff. Huey said he was leaving coaching temporarily to avoid uprooting his family, which includes a teen-aged son and daughter.
“Leslie blessed me by making me the offer at a time in my life when I needed the encouragement,” Huey said.
