Marvin Lewis to Meet With Bengals Team President to Discuss Future on Monday
Filed under: Bengals, AFC North
After presiding over the worst season imaginable for the Cincinnati Bengals, it’s reported Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis may walk away from the organization on his own.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lewis and the Bengals team president Mike Brown will meet on Monday about the defensive-minded coach’s future in Cincinnati.
“All I know is, officially today I’m no longer employed,” said Lewis, according to Schefter. “Where I am right now in my coaching career is a different point from where I was eight years ago, and I think this football team is a lot different than it was eight years ago, and that’s good. … We’re in a good spot.”
For Lewis, it’s more than just the money.
According to an unnamed source, Lewis was offered $4.7 million as an extension to stay as head coach before the 2010 campaign started. Lewis declined the offer because he wanted to see some changes in the team’s personnel department and to have the training facilities upgraded.
The same source stated that the University of Cincinnati wanted to partner with the Bengals to help build a training facility, but the Bengals’ organization declined. The University of Cincinnati opened their new athletic facilities, Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village, in May. The Bengals, in turn, approached the University about using their facility, but the institution turned their neighboring pro football team down, despite the distance between Paul Brown Stadium and the school’s facilities only being about 11 miles apart.
