Seahawks in Charlie Whitehurst’s Hands

RENTON, Wash. — For the moment, Charlie Whitehurst is the man the Seahawks are counting on to lead them into the playoffs. The backup quarterback will get all the snaps this week as Seattle gears up for a visit from St. Louis Sunday night with the winner claiming the NFC West title and a home game to start the playoffs.
That doesn’t mean that the club won’t be keeping a close eye on Matt Hasselbeck, who has started all but one of the club’s games this season.
Hasselbeck had to come out of Sunday’s 38-15 loss in Tampa Bay after a 1-yard first-quarter TD run put the Seahawks up 7-0. He left holding his left hip.
Monday, after an MRI and some other tests, Hasselbeck and the club agreed he wouldn’t practice with the Seahawks this week. However, the quarterback told coach Pete Carroll he is “absolutely determined” to play this weekend, and Carroll wouldn’t completely rule Hasselbeck out.
“A quarterback in his situation could get by with the walk-through and things like that and have a real good chance to have the game plan in command,” Carroll said in his regular Monday meeting with the media. “I don’t have any problem with that. It’s just not knowing.
